Jérôme Cuny, a physical oceanographer by training, has been at the forefront of climate issues for over 25 years. Following his experience as an academic researcher in the United States, Belgium and France, he founded or co-founded several companies involved in sustainable development. In 2021, he graduated from the Master Strategy & Design in the Anthropocene (ESC Clermont/Strate École de design), specializing in ecological redirection. Today, through his company IDH21, Jérôme Cuny works to spread the ideas of ecological redirection through teaching, training, business consulting and research in ecological socio-economics. He is particularly interested in the issues of reindustrialization, macroeconomics and behavioral change. He is the author of RELOCALISER (coll. Fake or Not, Ed. TANA, 2022) and La Redirection Ecologique des Entreprises (coll. Stratégie d’entreprise, Ed. DUNOD, 2025).
Today, and for many decades to come, human hopes are confined to the limits of our blue planet. Since the industrial revolution, we have been exploiting the Earth’s resources first to satisfy our basic needs, and then to improve our comfort levels. However, this resource extraction and the resulting impacts have reached such a scale that we are exceeding the Earth’s capacity limits and endangering its habitability for many species, including the human species. This overshoot also coincides with the observation of the limits of our socio-economic model, which is running out of steam and no longer generating the growth on which it is based. We are at a turning point in our society, forcing us to question the way it works.
