Éléonore Aubin is a sustainable development consultant at Cégep de Lévis. With a background in communication design, her career path in business and academia (teaching duties and eight years of doctoral research in pedagogy, design and sustainable development), has led her to take an interest in the impact of design and its power to intervene in global issues, in favor of sustainable change. She approaches her work with communities and environments from a perspective of social innovation and environmental education, experimenting with new avenues and promoting better behaviors and practices, helping to build an eco-citizen and committed society.
We understand the world as we perceive it. Our perception is shaped by our experiences, our culture, our values, our knowledge, who we are, our conscious and our unconscious. At a time when global crises are assailing us from all sides, how can we sharpen our perception to make it closer to and more representative of reality, to be in a position to make the right choices, and above all, to adopt the right behaviors? Our perception of the world is the result of both formal and informal education, which we approach here in the light of design and education for sustainable development. In the search for real, meaningful solutions, design proposes new postures and ways of approaching humanity’s problems, questioning dominant models in order to move towards innovative ones. Education for sustainable development and the greening of curricula, particularly at college level, are also seen as essential components of the socio-ecological transition. What’s more, this education should be “transformative”, focusing on critical awareness and the development of a set of skills to better address complexity. These young citizens, future workers and decision-makers would then be better able to perceive the scope of their own impact, both professionally and individually. Where does our energy go? In what and how do we invest it? It all depends on how we perceive it!
