Jean-Louis Giavitto is Director of Research at the CNRS and Deputy Director of the Sciences et technologies de la musique et du son (STMS) laboratory, a joint venture between the CNRS, the Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique (IRCAM) and Sorbonne-université. His research focuses on programming languages, and in particular on mechanisms for calculating a shape that develops in space and time. This research has been applied to the modeling and simulation of complex dynamic systems in biology (development processes) and music (analysis, composition, performance).
If music is an art of time, what kind of time is it? Is it possible to share this musical time between man and machine? These questions, which may seem theoretical, become very concrete in mixed music, where a computer must produce electronic sounds alongside human musicians. The aim is to clarify these questions and provide some answers, based on the development of the Antescofo system, a computer system that enables the composer to define an electronic response and to realize it, taking into account the performance of the instrumentalist during the concert.
