Moreno Andreatta

Biography

A graduate in mathematics from the University of Pavia and in piano from the Conservatory of Novara (Italy), Moreno Andreatta holds a doctorate in computational musicology from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) and is director of research at the CNRS within the Sciences et technologies de la musique et du son unit (shared by the Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique -Ircam-, the CNRS and Sorbonne université). Guest researcher at the University of Strasbourg, where he is in charge of the SMIR (Structural Music Information Research) project, he teaches formal models in song as part of the “Musiques actuelles” degree program. A founding member of the Journal of Mathematics and Music, he is currently vice-president of the Society for Mathematics and Computation in Music.

Conference: Is music the art of time or space?

While mathematics has always been an integral part of thinking about the theoretical foundations of music, it has now become an essential part of computational music analysis, in particular because of the profound link between theoretical formalization and computer modeling of musical structures and processes. What role do or can the various spatial and temporal representations of musical structures and processes play? Beyond these theoretical and computational aspects, “mathematical-musical” research raises societal questions that directly affect the transmission of knowledge, both to specialists (musicologists, composers and scientists) and to the general public. This lecture-concert, the fruit of a collaborative effort between a researcher and a stage director, will demonstrate the value of approaching music in its dual component, both spatial and temporal, and without an ideological and often caricatured separation of the various musical practices within scholarly music and pop music.
