IGN is the French government’s operator for certified neutral and interoperable geographic and forestry information. The Institute is constantly developing new reference systems, products and geoservices to meet the growing and evolving needs for cartographic data and geolocalized information. As a public-sector player in the field of digital multi-theme land description, the Institute supports the assessment and implementation of public policies in the fields of risk prevention, land use planning, sustainable development, defense and security. Thanks to its research laboratories – UMR LaSTIG (Laboratoire en sciences et technologies de l’information géographique), UMR IPGP (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris) and Lif (Laboratoire d’inventaire forestier) – IGN maintains a high level of innovation potential in the fields of geodesy, vector topography, optics and electronics, image processing and forest inventory. ENSG-Géomatique, IGN’s national school of geographic sciences, trains future geographic information engineers.
