Aéroclub de France

100 years of history

Created on October 20, 1898 by the pioneers of the conquest of the skies, the Aéro-Club de France, presented as “the society for the encouragement of aerial locomotion in all its forms and applications”, is today the living memory of one of the greatest adventures mankind has ever known: aviation. As the world’s first national flying club, and organizer of the first air prizes such as the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize and the Gordon Bennett Cup, the Aéro-Club de France became the institution that certified the first flights and records, then issued air regulations and pilot licences from 1909 to 1921. Supporting research and technological development in the early 20th century, the Aéro-Club de France encouraged the development of meetings, rallies, popular events and promotion of aeronautics. After 1945, when people’s ambitions turned towards the cosmos, the institution supported and accompanied technological innovations. Today, the Aéro-Club de France, recognized as a public utility, is the guarantor of the transmission of a heritage of freedom and fraternity. Thanks to its international reach, the Aéro-Club de France supports the training of Air Cadets from nineteen countries, and participates in numerous projects and innovative initiatives in the field of aeronautics, to enable us to go higher, faster and further.
